[00:00:05] Somewhere between what actually happened and what history eventually chose to remember. [00:00:10] Something rather strange has happened to a great many women. [00:00:16] They did not disappear, of course. They lived full and complicated lives, loved people, created things, made choices, challenged people, made mistakes, and occasionally changed the world around them. Luckily. [00:00:31] But somewhere along that way, their voices became quieter, until their stories were told by somebody else, claimed by someone else, reduced to a few convenient lines in history, or simply stopped being told at all. [00:00:50] I have always been fascinated by that sight, and particularly by the women whose names I never learned at school. [00:00:58] The ones hiding in paintings, manuscripts and other letters or somewhere in the margins of stories I thought I already knew. [00:01:08] And eventually I began wondering what would happen if we went looking for them again. [00:01:15] Not simply to ask what they achieved or why somebody decided centuries later that they deserved a rightful place in a history book, but to get a little closer to the women themselves and to ask who they were before history decided what to do with them. [00:01:35] And so I started looking through archives, paintings, letters, and the spaces between the official stories. [00:01:44] And the closer I looked, the more women I found. [00:01:49] Women who were far more complicated, surprising and gloriously inconvenient than the neat versions of them we sometimes inherit. [00:01:59] And that is when something else magically happened. [00:02:05] Because every story may begin with one woman, finding her is only the beginning of the journey. [00:02:14] Once you start looking closely at the past, you begin to notice how many voices are still missing. [00:02:21] And some of them appear to have left something behind. [00:02:27] My name is Valerie, and apparently I have become the Archivist. [00:02:32] Welcome to the Ministry of Lost Voice Voices, Unseen stories still belong. [00:02:40] Exc silentio vox.
